Goniopora sp.

Spectacular LPS (Large Polyp Stony) hard coral with long tentacles extended during the day. Historically difficult to maintain in captivity, with a low survival rate. Red and green Goniopora are reputed to be more robust. Requires solid expertise in reef keeping.
Mature reef aquarium minimum 200 liters, imperative chemical stability (calcium 400-450 mg/L, KH 8-12 dKH, magnesium 1250-1350 mg/L). Moderate to medium lighting (PAR 75-150), placed in mid or lower zone depending on species. Medium, alternating flow, not direct. Sandy substrate or placement on stable rock. Avoid sudden parameter fluctuations.
Feeds primarily through photosynthesis (symbiotic zooxanthellae) but must be supplemented 2-3 times/week with phytoplankton, zooplankton, liquid coral foods or artemia nauplii. Targeted feeding recommended in the evening when polyps are extended.
Demanding coral, not recommended for beginners. Very sensitive to stress, transport and delicate acclimation. Monitor prolonged polyp retraction (sign of stress/disease). May slowly decline without apparent cause. Space away from other corals (low aggression but contact harmful). Test regularly nitrates (<10 mg/L) and phosphates (0.03-0.1 mg/L). Patience essential: long adaptation period.
