Lobophytum sp.
Lobophytum is a soft coral from the Alcyoniidae family, highly appreciated in reef aquariums for its relative hardiness and fleshy appearance shaped like lobes or fingers. It possesses symbiotic zooxanthellae that provide most of its energy through photosynthesis. Colony can reach 20-30 cm, with colors ranging from beige to brown, sometimes greenish.
Reef aquarium minimum 200 liters, mature and stable. Temperature 24-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4. Requires moderate to high lighting (LED or T5) and moderate to strong flow, with alternating current to prevent detritus accumulation. Place on stable rock, in mid-zone with growth space. Calcium 400-450 mg/L, KH 7-10 dKH, magnesium 1250-1350 mg/L. Avoid direct contact with other corals (toxins).
Derives most of its energy from photosynthesis through zooxanthellae. Can capture microplankton and benefit from occasional feedings of phytoplankton, zooplankton or liquid coral foods (1-2 times/week). Feed in the evening when polyps are extended. An aquarium with developed microfauna is beneficial.
Periodically, Lobophytum sheds by producing a waxy film: it fully retracts for 2-7 days, this is normal. Never remove this film manually. Beware of toxic secretions (terpenes) that can affect other corals: ensure filtration with activated carbon and regular water changes. Compatible with reef fish and peaceful invertebrates. Avoid predators (some butterflyfish, crabs). Easy fragmentation for propagation. Monitor water quality, avoid nitrates >10 mg/L and phosphates >0.05 mg/L.
