Environment

Plan for an aquarium of at least 100 liters and sufficiently tall, as its leaves can reach 40 to 50 cm. It appreciates rather neutral water (pH 6.0 to 7.5) between 22 and 28 °C, in stable parameters. Give it space, as an adult rosette occupies considerable volume.

Feeding

Demanding plant with mainly root nutrition: a rich nutritive substrate or fertilizer tablets slipped under the roots are essential to its vigor. Medium light is sufficient, and CO2 injection is not essential but promotes denser growth. Supplement if needed with an iron-rich fertilizer to avoid leaf yellowing.

Health & common diseases

The Amazon Sword is a robust plant but can suffer from iron deficiency (yellowing leaves with green veins), potassium deficiency (holes and tears in leaves) or macro-nutrient deficiency (slowed growth, pale leaves). Insufficient lighting causes etiolation and loss of lower leaves. Prevention involves a nutritive substrate, regular adapted fertilization and lighting of 8 to 10 hours per day. Removing damaged or dead leaves prevents the proliferation of algae and fungi.

Tips & tankmates

Regularly remove old damaged or yellowed leaves at the base to stimulate renewal. It reproduces via flower stalks bearing plantlets that can be detached and replanted. Avoid moving it too often, as its deep root system dislikes being disturbed.
