Pterophyllum scalare

The angelfish is a majestic cichlid from the Amazon with a tall, flattened body extended by long veil-like fins. Elegant and imposing, it becomes the centrepiece of a large aquarium. It lives in a group that establishes a hierarchy, especially at breeding time.
Because of its height (up to 15 cm without the fins) and its adult size, it requires a tall aquarium of at least 200 litres. Keep the water between 24 and 28 °C, pH 6 to 7.5, with tall plants and vertical roots evoking its biotope. A group of 5 to 6 individuals helps dilute tensions.
An omnivore with carnivorous tendencies, it appreciates granules, flakes and live or frozen meaty prey (bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill). Vary the diet to preserve its colours and its condition. Feed at regular times.
A classic mistake: pairing it with neon tetras or other small fish, which it ends up swallowing once adult. Also avoid fin-nipping species and those with large fins (which it may also nibble, e.g. guppy). During spawning, a pair can become aggressive towards its conspecifics and defend its territory.
