Xiphophorus maculatus

The platy is a small, peaceful and colourful livebearing fish, available in many varieties (coral red, mickey, wagtail). Easy and hardy, it is very well suited to beginners. Sociable, it readily moves about in a small group in the community aquarium.
A tank of at least 54 litres holds a group, ideally with a majority of females to limit harassment by the males (at least 2 to 3 females per male). It enjoys hard, alkaline water (pH 7 to 8, high GH), between 22 and 26 °C. Planting that provides refuges protects the fry.
An omnivore, it accepts flakes, granules and frozen prey, but needs a good share of plant matter (algae, spirulina flakes). Vary its intake to maintain its colours. Distribute in small amounts several times a day.
Like all livebearers, it breeds easily; anticipate the growth of the population. Water that is too soft and acidic weakens it. Avoid mixing too many varieties if you wish to keep distinct lines, as crossings are frequent.
