Ancistrus sp.

The Ancistrus is a small, hardy Loricariid, valued for its role as an algae cleaner and its peaceful behaviour. Males develop characteristic tentacles on the snout. A nocturnal species, excellent for starting out with bottom-dwelling fish.
Minimum 100-litre aquarium. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6-7.5), temperature 22-28°C, GH 5-15. Provide numerous hiding places: roots, PVC tubes, caves, slate. Roots are essential as it rasps the wood to aid digestion. Subdued lighting is preferable. Good water movement and oxygenation. Regular water changes (10% weekly).
Mainly herbivorous: spirulina wafers, slices of blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach. Supplement with bottom wafers and occasionally meaty prey (bloodworms, brine shrimp). Feed in the evening and remove uneaten vegetables after 24 hours. Do not rely solely on the tank's algae.
Easy cohabitation with most peaceful species. Avoid overcrowding with Loricariids (territoriality between males). An excellent breeder in the aquarium: the male guards the eggs in a cavity. Be careful not to release it into the wild: the Ancistrus can become invasive in some warm regions. Think of its welfare: multiple hiding places, floor space and the addition of wood.
