Anubias barteri

Anubias barteri is a hardy aquatic plant with thick, dark green, leathery leaves. Highly tolerant and slow-growing, it is virtually indestructible and ideal for beginners. Its toughness allows it to withstand even digging or herbivorous fish.
It is suitable from 20 litres and develops between 22 and 28 °C, pH 6 to 7.5. Its slow growth makes it perfect as an attachment plant at mid-height or in the foreground, on roots or rocks. It thrives in low to moderate light and hates excess lighting, which encourages algae on its leaves.
It is content with modest lighting, with no CO2 required, and draws most of its nutrients from the water. A light liquid fertilisation is enough to maintain attractive foliage.
The rhizome must never be buried or it will rot, which is the most common mistake and dooms the plant. Place it instead in the shade of taller plants or decor to limit algae. It is easily propagated by cutting the rhizome, with each fragment bearing leaves and roots.
