Atyopsis gabonensis
Large filter-feeding shrimp native to West Africa (Gabon, Cameroon). It uses its fans to capture particles suspended in the current. Peaceful and spectacular species, ideal for well-planted community aquarium with strong current.
Aquarium of at least 120 liters with moderate to strong current (circulation pump recommended). Provide elevated perches: rocks, driftwood, sturdy plants where it can position itself facing the current to filter. Clear and well-oxygenated water essential. Avoid high nitrates (< 20 mg/L). Favor a mature tank with established micro-fauna. Temperature 22-26°C, pH 6.5-7.5, GH 4-15. Moderate lighting, numerous hiding spots.
Strict filter feeder: feeds on micro-organisms, detritus, phytoplankton and suspended organic particles. Feed with fine powdered foods (spirulina, fry food), liquid foods for invertebrates or infusoria. Distribute upstream of the current. In a well-established tank, finds part of its food naturally. Supplement 2-3 times per week with specific foods. Does not eat algae or food from the substrate.
Very peaceful, compatible with non-aggressive fish and shrimp. Keep in groups of 3 minimum for social well-being. Sensitive to sudden parameter changes and chemicals (copper, medications). Avoid any copper-based treatment. Molts regularly: do not disturb during this vulnerable period. Uncommon species in the trade, often confused with Atyopsis moluccensis (Asian version). Verify geographic origin when purchasing. Reproduction in aquarium nearly impossible (larvae require brackish water).
