Corydoras aeneus

The bronze corydoras is a small, armoured peaceful bottom-dwelling catfish and a tireless substrate forager. Recognisable by its coppery sheen and its barbels, it lives in a group and cheerfully enlivens the lower part of the aquarium. It is a hardy, long-lived species, perfect for beginners.
Allow at least 80 litres and a group of at least 6 individuals, as it is a gregarious fish that wastes away when kept alone. Favour a substrate of fine sand or rounded gravel to protect its barbels, water between 22 and 26 °C, pH 6 to 7.5. A few roots and shaded areas reassure it.
An omnivorous bottom feeder, it consumes granules and sinking wafers, as well as live or frozen prey (bloodworms, brine shrimp). Make sure it gets its share: the food must reach the bottom and not be intercepted by surface fish.
Avoid sharp, cutting substrates that injure and infect its barbels. Never keep it alone or in a pair. It sometimes rises to the surface to gulp a bubble of air; this is normal intestinal-respiration behaviour, not a sign of distress.
