Environment
Provide at least 60 litres and a shoal of 8 individuals minimum, as it is a very gregarious fish. It tolerates a wide temperature range (18 to 24 °C), making it compatible with unheated or lightly heated tanks, pH 6.5 to 7.5. A long aquarium, with some current and a lid, suits this athletic swimmer and jumper.
Feeding
Undemanding omnivore, it accepts flakes, fine granules and small live or frozen prey. Vary its diet to maintain its vitality. A few small meals per day are sufficient.
Health & common diseases
The zebrafish is robust but can be affected by ichthyophthirius (white spot), recognizable by small spots on the body and fins, as well as fin rot (frayed, whitish edges). It can also develop fungal infections in case of injury or stress. Good water quality (regular changes), stable temperature (24-26°C), varied diet and avoiding overcrowding help prevent most diseases.
Tips & tankmates
Kept in too small numbers, it can become nervous and harass its neighbors, especially their fins. Cover the aquarium well as it jumps easily. Avoid pairing it with slow species or those with long fins, which it may stress with its agitation.
