Neritina natalensis

The zebra nerite snail is a small freshwater snail renowned as one of the best algae eaters for the aquarium. Its black and yellow striped shell is very decorative. It stays small and is completely harmless to plants, which it never devours.
It prefers fairly hard water and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, ideally above 7. A well-established aquarium with surfaces colonized by algae suits it perfectly. Be sure to cover the aquarium as it can escape out of the water and it tolerates high nitrates poorly.
It constantly grazes on green algae and diatoms on decorations, glass and plants. If algae are lacking, supplement with algae-based tablets or blanched vegetables like zucchini. Avoid any treatment containing copper, which is toxic to invertebrates.
The nerite does not reproduce in freshwater: it lays small white capsules that will never hatch without brackish water. This prevents any proliferation but the egg deposits can be unsightly on decorations. Handle it gently and never leave it upside down for too long.
