Poecilia sphenops

The molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a hardy and very popular livebearer in aquaristics, ideal for beginners. Peaceful and gregarious, it thrives in small groups and appreciates hard, alkaline water. Its adult size ranges from about 6 to 10 cm depending on sex and variety.
Provide an aquarium of at least 80 liters, well-planted and bright, with some open swimming areas. The water must be hard and rather alkaline (pH 7.0 to 8.5), at a temperature of 24 to 28 °C. The species tolerates slight salinity but this is not essential in well-mineralized freshwater.
Omnivorous with a strong vegetable tendency, the molly readily grazes on algae and biofilm. Offer quality flakes or pellets enriched with spirulina, supplemented with blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach) and small live or frozen prey. A significant vegetable portion prevents digestive problems.
Ideally keep one male for two or three females to limit harassment. Breeding is very easy and frequent: provide dense plants to shelter the fry. Well-mineralized and stable water reduces sensitivity to skin diseases.
