Taxiphyllum barbieri

Java moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri) is a highly versatile aquatic moss, among the easiest plants to grow. It attaches to rocks, roots and decorations, forming dense clumps appreciated by shrimp and fry. It is a classic staple of planted tanks for beginners.
It tolerates a very wide range of conditions: temperature from 18 to 30 °C and pH from 5.5 to 8.0, in soft to moderately hard water. It thrives in almost all aquariums, including shrimp tanks and breeding tanks. Clean water limits debris accumulation in its fronds.
Very undemanding plant: low to medium light is sufficient, with no CO2 injection required. It does not need substrate since it attaches to surfaces; fix it onto a rock or driftwood with thread or aquarium-safe glue. Light liquid fertilization accelerates its growth but remains optional.
Trim it regularly with scissors to maintain a compact shape and prevent it from trapping too much detritus. Under excessive light, it may become covered with algae: reduce lighting in that case. It provides ideal shelter for fry and newborn shrimp.
