Vallisneria spiralis

Vallisneria is a background plant with long ribbon-like leaves that ripple in the current. Vigorous and easy, it quickly forms dense green curtains through its runners. It is a great classic for furnishing the back of the aquarium.
Suitable from 54 litres but especially in taller tanks, it grows between 18 and 28 °C, pH 6.5 to 8. It is planted in the background, taking care not to bury the crown (base of the leaves) to avoid rot. It tolerates moderate light and copes with fairly hard water.
A substrate plant that feeds mainly through its roots, it benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs. CO2 is not required but clearly speeds up its growth. Ensure a good iron supply to prevent the leaves from yellowing.
It spreads very quickly via runners and can take over the tank: trim the young plantlets regularly. Avoid burying the base of the leaves when planting. Sensitive to excess copper, so be careful with certain medication treatments.
