Xiphophorus hellerii

The swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii), often called xipho, is a lively and colorful livebearer recognizable by the sword-like extension of the male's caudal fin. Hardy and easy to keep, it is well suited for beginners. With the sword, the male can reach 10 to 12 cm.
Provide a tank of at least 100 liters, elongated for swimming, planted on the sides with an open central area. The water should be hard and alkaline (pH 7.0 to 8.3) between 22 and 28 °C. A well-fitted lid is recommended as this jumper can leap out of the water.
Omnivorous, the swordtail accepts flakes, pellets, frozen prey (brine shrimp, bloodworms) and plant matter such as spirulina or blanched vegetables. Vary the diet to maintain bright colors and good health. Avoid overfeeding.
Males can be territorial with each other: keep a single male or conversely a fairly large group with several females to dilute aggression. Breeding is very easy and prolific; provide floating plants for the fry. Some dominant females may develop male characteristics.
